Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), falls under the umbrella term of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, which is used to define the disabilities resulting from pre-natal alcohol exposure (Stiessguth, 1997). It is a birth defect that has a primary effect on the brain. FASD has been found to be the leading cause of developmental disability among Canadian children. FAS specifically, is defined by growth deficiency, specific facial features and signs of central nervous system dysfunctions (Stiessguth, 1997). Everybody born with FAS is affected differently.
